brief history of the CAQ process and progress.
The Bureau of Osteopathic Specialist (BOS) is the branch of the AOA that
gives us Board Certification and CAQ’s.
The BOS has approved our CAQ, pending approval of the Training
Requirements for Hand Surgery, which has been submitted to the Council on
Osteopathic Postgraduate Training (another branch of the AOA). The COPT meets this November, and it is anticipated
the process will then be complete and the CAQ certificates will be issued by

Business
A. Application Criteria
1. A general discussion was undertaken
regarding the criteria for membership.
Several years ago there was interest in requiring formal postgraduate
fellowship to become a member of the hand section. This was never formalized and no changes were made to the
By-Laws. At this time, the consensus
of the members present is to leave the requirements as they are. No motion for change was made at this time,
and the training requirement for membership remains 3 months during Residency
on a formal hand rotation.
2. Dr. John Martin made a motion, seconded by
Dr. Bamberger to require passing the CAQ to be an officer of the hand section
beginning the fall of 2002. According
to the By-Laws, this “amendment” will be sent to the membership prior to next
year’s meeting and voted on at that time.
3. Regarding membership of general and plastic
hand surgeons, Dr. Bowden stated the AOAO has established an Associate
Membership that allows participation in the AOAO sections. Therefore, no By Law change is necessary for
D.O. general and plastic hand surgeons to be members of the hand section
B. The financial status is such that dues have been decreased to
$50.00/year.
C. Officer Election. Dr.
Stefan Zachary was elected as third Vice President. He will be in charge of the 2003 meeting. Therefore, the current officers are:
President: Richard Howard, D.O., St. Louis, MO
1st VP: James Kelly, D.O., Buffalo, NY
2nd VP: Scott Fried, D.O., E. Norriton, PA
3rd VP: Stefan Zachary, D.O., Madison, WI
